Everything you need to know about joining the Women+ in Geospatial Mentorship Programme — as a volunteer, a mentee, or a mentor (women and men).
For the 8th time, Women+ in Geospatial is opening a Mentorship Programme to the GIS professionals who want to grow, give back, or both.
This is an exceptional way how to grow personally, gain new transferable skills, and get remote work experience. Everything from your home, without travelling or costing you money.
The whole programme is free of charge.
I first joined this mentorship programme in 2023 and I’ve been a part of it since then:
First as a peer-mentor
Then as a mentor
This year as an organisation volunteer
Each year has thought me something new, and even helped me to get my current job.
There are 3 ways how you can join - apply for one, two, or all three (as long as you meet the gender condition for each role).
These are your options:
1. Mentor - “Help Your Past Self”
Open to: women and men
If you've ever thought "I wish someone had told me this five years ago" - this is your chance to be that someone.
Mentoring isn’t just generous, it’ll help you build skills you don’t know you might be missing. Explaining what you know to someone junior to you forces you to think about it in a “beginner” way.
You may have forgotten how much you’ve learn. But this role will help you remember how you felt and you’ll realize how much you’ve grown. It helps you work on your communication, patience, and your leadership skills.
This is a great way how to build visibility in the GIS community.
The mentor role is open to everyone - men and women.
Do you feel like you have nothing to offer? That is not true. You can help your mentee(s) with - growing coding skills, building a portfolio, work on their communication and presentation skills, any other hard or soft skills.
The mentee will mainly be doing the hard work. You’ll be their guide giving hints.
You are never too junior to be a mentor!

2. Mentee - “Grow With Someone a Few Steps Ahead of You”
Open to: women
This is the role most people think of when they hear “mentorship programme”.
Being a mentee is about doing the hard work, while learning how to ask better questions, how to advocate for yourself, and how to take feedback from someone who’s already walked your path.
By becoming a mentee, you will also grow your network (can be a game changer in the future), and gain highly-valued remote and asynchronous work skills.
Do you communicate via WhatsApp, Circle, update code in GitHub? It’s up to you and your mentor to find a way that suits you well between your meetings.

3. Volunteer - “Run the Programme Behind the Scenes”
Open to: women
You don’t feel like becoming a mentor or a mentee, yet you want to gain new organization, communication, and remote work skills?
Join us as a volunteer!
This is the role people underestimate the most. At the same time, it’s the role that teaches the widest range of remote-first skills.
The programme runs completely asynchronously, across time zones, without a shared office. Every volunteer role is a crash course in the remote job skills:
Coordinating with a distributed team without ever meeting in person
Owning a piece of a program end-to-end and reporting on it clearly
Written communication that has to work without seeing each other
Project and time management with no one looking over your shoulder

1. External Comms Lead
Help us amplify our impact and celebrate our community!
As the External Communications Lead, you will shape the public presence of the GeoRise Mentorship Programme by leading our external communications strategy.
You will oversee the creation of engaging content and promotional materials, highlight participant and programme success stories, and ensure consistent branding across all channels.
You will also support and coordinate the External Communications Team, providing guidance and overseeing the delivery of communications throughout the programme.
Skills: Leadership, Graphic Design, Visual Storytelling, Branding, Canva/Adobe Creative Suite, Social Media Marketing, Content Creation, Project Coordination.
2. Sponsorship Team
Build and maintain strong, mutually beneficial relationships with our corporate partners and sponsors.
In this leadership role, you will manage sponsor engagement, track deliverables, and analyse participant feedback via surveys to measure program impact.
Your efforts ensure our sponsors feel deeply valued and clearly see the tangible impact of their contributions.

3. Legacy Specialist
Support cohort participants through the design and execution of their unique legacy ideas.
In this supportive role, you will guide individuals in bringing their ideas to life while managing updates to our online project gallery.
Your efforts ensure participant achievements are beautifully preserved and showcased to the wider geospatial community.

4. External Communications Team
Help us share the GeoRise story with the world!
As part of the External Communications Team, you will create engaging social media content, design graphics, support campaigns, and showcase the achievements of our mentors, mentees, volunteers, and community.
Working closely with the External Communications Lead, you’ll help promote programme activities and increase the visibility of GeoRise across our platforms.
Skills: Graphic Design, Canva/Adobe Creative Suite, Content Creation, Copywriting, Social Media, Creativity, Attention to Detail, Collaboration
5. Engagement Team
Foster a vibrant, deeply connected community on our internal Circle platform.
In this community-facing role, you will manage internal communications, curate monthly cohort newsletters, and design feedback surveys.
Your engagement strategies ensure we understand and actively meet the day-to-day needs of our global participants.
Skills: Community Management, Newsletter Curation, Internal Communications, Survey Design, Audience Engagement, Platform Facilitation
6. Event Organiser
Collaborate closely with track leads and the external team to identify, plan, and facilitate workshops and events for the cohort.
In this operational role, you will handle speaker coordination, logistics planning, and live session management.
Your execution ensures our educational sessions run smoothly and professionally.

7. Mentorship Coordinator
Act as the primary point of support and connection for assigned mentor/mentee pairs or groups. In this relational role, you will facilitate regular check-ins, track participant progress, and proactively troubleshoot any relationship challenges. Your continuous support ensures a fulfilling and successful experience for all participants.

Dedicated Time: Max 5 hours per month
